Staying Connected with Teletherapy

In-person or face-to-face therapy is the preferred method to delivering psychotherapy, however, there are very good reasons why we might need to adapt by utilizing virtual means of participating in therapy. Teletherapy is the method of engaging in psychotherapy (talk therapy) via HIPAA compliant video or telephone. To make teletherapy more successful, consider the following:

  1. Find a comfortable and secure location. Headphones/ earbuds work well to protect parts of the conversation. A white noise machine or fan could mask conversations as well.
  2. Write down ideas or topics that come to you during the week that you intend on discussing with your therapist. The work of therapy often happens outside of the therapy session in the week or weeks between appointments. Your observations and insights are great content to bring into your Teletherapy appointment.
  3. Take some time before and after the session to prepare and transition into the mindset of therapy. Grab some water and tissue. Make sure you have a full charge on your device or a charger nearby. Take a moment to reflect on the week, tune into your feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations. Take care of any immediate needs (hunger, thirst, bathroom, etc.)
  4. Make sure you have good internet or cell reception.
  5. Have the app loaded or the best browser for the link you are going to access.
